DESCRIPTION: This Northwest factory promotional photo was taken in March 1940 while working on a section of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Looking brand new, this NORTHWEST Model 80-D Shovel was owned by contractor N. R. Corbisello of Binghamton, NY. The Mack appears to be one of the sturdy F Model family built from 1938 into the late 1940s.:
NORTHWEST 80-D SHOVEL: The 80-D was arguably the most famous and longest lasting Northwest Engineering Co. design to roll out of the Northwest Shops in Green Bay, Wisc. Nominally rated at 2-1/2 CY, some 2,600 Model 80-D’s were produced and shipped worldwide since its interaction in 1933.
HISTORY OF THE MODEL ‘F’ MACKS: By the mid-1930s, the AC and AP were dated vehicles. To remain competitive, Mack designed a ne.w line of off-highway trucks and named them the “Super-Duty” line. Some 1700 Super-Duty trucks were built between 1937 and 1950. With a few exceptions, all were chain-driven and served as dump trucks or concrete mixers in the construction and mining industries. The FG, FH, FJ, and FK were all basically similar, but with larger tires and beefed up chassis. Both came standard with the 6-cylinder gasoline 611 cid model EP engine, and the Cummins 6-cylinder diesel 672 cid model HB-6 as an option. Between 1938-1941 there were 123 Model FK Macks built.
N. R. CORBISELLO, INC.: Was a former heavy contractor and road builder from Binghamton, NY. My oldest son was Sr. Superintendent on a large City of Binghamton Sewage Treatment Plant expansion project from 2017-2020, and asked one of his local material suppliers about the Corbisello company. They were a well known and respected local heavy contractor for many years. They held a contract in the late 1930s to build a section of the original 160 miles of the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Court records show the company doing business in the 1940s, and as late as 1952. An obituary of Michael Restino from 2012 stated that he worked his entire career of over 60 years for N. R. Corbisello, retiring as President and co-owner.
