    Description

Rare 1939 New York World's Fair Official National Poster Contest Bronze Medal
On offer is a rare boxed example of the medal awarded to winners of the National Poster Competition of the 1939 New York World's Fair.
The National Poster Competition was officially announced on March 30, 1937 and was open to students throughout the country. Participants could submit original poster designs for the New York World's Fair with the winners announced in late 1938. First place went to Joseph Binder. Second to Albert Staehle and third to Jean Atheron.
The medal's obverse bears the figure of a boy at his easel preparing his poster  submission in the traditional manner with easel and palette. The words NAIONAL POSTER COMPETITION srround the figure.
The medal's reverse bears the New York World's Fair these building the 610' ft trylon and 180' ft perisphere. To left of the trylon, 1939; across, N/EW YORK / WORLD'S / FAIR.
The medal was struck in bronze and silver, with the silver pieces being even rarer than those struck in bronze. The high relief of thiis medal shows the design well, and the original patina is present as this is a fully uncleaned example. The gold and cream velvet lined original box of issue is also included
    This medal measures 51mm (
    a full two inches
) in diameter and was struck by the Whitehead & Hoag Company of Newark, New Jersey -
    incuse on rim.
An excellent addition to any Exposition or Numismatic/medal collection.
