    Description

This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy photo new reproduction of a 1933 AUTOCAR Model NB with ETNYRE Asphalt Distributor, owned by D. J. McGONAGLE.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: This ETRYRE Bituminous Distributor is mounted on an AUTOCAR Model NB, believed to be a 1933 model. This ‘classy’ truck was most likely powered with Autocar’s new Blue Streak gasoline engine, introduced in 1930. While not much is known about owner D. J. McGonagle, there was a D. J. McGonagle on the Boston, MA City Council in 1904 … perhaps he later got into the asphalt paving business? Notice the separate engine drive on the back of the Distributor, with an operator’s seat to control the rate of bituminous material distribution. My original vintage photo was part of the Fred Perkins photo collection … a famous vintage truck historian from Weston, MA, who died in 2007.
    E. D. ETNYRE & CO.: The history of the Etnyre company began with simple hog watering troughs and horse drawn water wagons, leading into the highway construction industry to today’s highly accurate, computer-controlled machines. The early Road Oiler of the ‘teens, was initially driven from one axle by a sprocket and chain, and later a gasoline engine. The Bituminous Distributor was designed to apply asphalt as part of the road paving process. By 1921, Etnyre was using a corrugated block insulation for their distributors, providing more insulating value and structural strength to maintain the original spacing between the tank and jacket. Etnyre’s products earned a reputation of rugged dependability, in the 1920s becoming the world’s largest manufacturer of bituminous distributors in the world. E. D. Etnyre & Co. still manufactures a broad line of construction products in Oregon, IL, where it was formally established in 1898.
