Description
This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy photo new reproduction of an unusual ca.1930 KENWORTH Horizontal Concrete Mixer Truck.”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: This unusual Kenworth horizontal concrete mixer has a hydraulic hoist on the mixer subframe, similar to a dump truck. In the background is an early central mix concrete plant, and behind the raised mixer body on the KW is an unknown 1920s mixer truck with an open C-cab completely different from this KW. The Kenworth in this photo is similar to a 1930 KW that is pictured in
The Illustrated Encyclopedia of American Trucks and Commercial Vehicles
by Albert Mroz. The cab sides are open with no provision for any weather protection, with a 1-piece flat windshield, and most likely a fabric roof with steel cab sides. The horizontal mixer is unlike any I have seen. I have no idea why a rubber tire was mounted on the front of the chain-drive mixer.
Any information you might have on the truck or mixer in this photo, I would appreciate hearing from you.
This 8x10 photo has white borders on the top and bottom, but is borderless on the sides.
KENWORTH MOTOR TRUCK CORP.: The Kenworth truck took its name in 1923 from H. W. Kent and E. K. Worthington, who had been directors of its predecessor company, Gersix Mfg. Production was started in Seattle, WA in 1924 when 80 trucks were sold. By 1926, production was 99 trucks for the year, and by 1927 production reached three trucks per week. Guessing that this photo may have been of a 5-Ton Model, the 5-Ton Model RS was powered with a 78-hp Buda 6-cylinder gasoline engine. In 1927, KW expanded their assembly facilities into Vancouver, doubling their west coast market. By 1930 KW had introduced new technology which included vacuum boosters for hydraulic brakes and tandem axle models, Cummins diesels in 1933 along with their first sleeper cab, and aluminum components in 1935. In 1945 Kenworth was sold to Pacific Car & Foundry (now PACAR) who relocated it to the former Fischer Body Plant in Seattle where it has operated ever since.
