    Description

This photo is an outstanding 8” x 10” reproduction black & white glossy new photo of a late 1920s STERLING MOTOR TRUCK with a UNIVERSAL CRANE mounted on the rear with the very unique UNIVERSAL CRANE MOTOR TRUCK CRAWLER Attachment.
This photo of mine was featured on the October 2018 page of the HCEA (Historical Construction Equipment Association) calendar.
Note: a photo copy of an ENR 1927 magazine ad for the Universal Motor Truck Crawler Attachment will be included, complementary with this photo.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: Date of this borderless photo is unknown, but since the “Universal Crane Motor Truck Crawler” attachment was introduced early in 1927, and since both truck and crane look brand new, I would judge this photo to be from ca. 1927. This Sterling is possibly a Series E. In place of the standard rear axles, this truck is equipped with the unique “Universal Crane Motor Truck Crawler” axle assembly, which was designed to fit on any standard 4-wheel truck. This attachment allowed the truck to run from job to job on 8-hard rubber tires at suggested speeds of 6 to 8-mph. Advertisements claimed “better traveling ability with greater stability”. For travel, the crawler tracks were removed, and can be seen carried behind the rear tires in this photo.
The Universal Crane in this photo carries a clamshell bucket on its standard riveted boom. The side of the open cab Sterling carries the name of the owner: New York Department of Public Works, Division of Highways, District No. 6”.
UNIVERSAL CRANE Co. of Cleveland, OH, was an early pioneer in mounting cranes on motor trucks for greater job site mobility. Universal Crane was eventually merged into Thew-Lorain.
STERLING MOTORS and its predecessor Sternberg Motor Truck Co. produced premium heavy-duty trucks for severe service in Milwaukee from 1907 to 1953. Sterling highway models were popular on the west coast where they had a strong dealer network, but most Sterlings were custom built for off-highway severe-service use. Sterling was purchased by The White Motor Company in 1951, and rebadged as Sterling-Whites. Milwaukee production was moved to Cleveland in 1953. White’s acquisition of Autocar in 1953, and with Sterling-White only producing 250 trucks in 1952, White terminated Sterling-White production in 1954. Approximately 12,000 Sterlings were produced over their 50-year lifespan.
