    Description

This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of a fleet of  six MACK Model AB Chain Drive Trucks with St. Paul Dump Bodies & Hoists, owned by the GROVES CONSTRUCTION CO., Minneapolis, MN … also known as S. J. GROVES & SON COMPANY.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: This photo appeared on a March 1927 magazine cover claiming that for 15 years, St. Paul Vertical & Underbody Hydraulic Hoists have been proving “that they  are the least expensive of all hoists” … dating St. Paul Hoists to 1912. The hydraulic hoist was invented by mechanical genius GAR WOOD in 1911 in his back yard garage in St. Paul, for which he obtained a patient. The ‘St. Paul’ trade name was used by ‘Hydraulic Hoist Manufacturing Co.’ of St. Paul. I do not know what connection Gar Wood and St. Paul Hoist may have had, but there had to be some connection. Gar Wood made a great deal of money from his hoist invention and moved to Detroit in 1915 to pursue his first love - speedboat racing. In 1922 he established the Gar Wood Hoist and Body Company, which later expanded and was renamed Gar Wood Industries, Inc. in 1933.
AB MACKS: The AB MACK featured in this photo was a fleet of six, with St . Paul Medium Duty Underbody Hydraulic Hoists and Model 112 Bodies, built for the Groves Construction Co., of Minneapolis, Minn. The Model AB Mack, often called the ‘Baby Bulldog’ was produced from 1914 to 1936. In its 22 year production span, Mack produced a total of 51,613 Model AB’s, substantial testimony for its customer satisfaction and loyalty, making it the highest volume Mack ever made. Originally the AB was powered with a Mack 4-cylinder 60-horsepower gasoline engine with chain drive, hard rubber tires and a brass radiator. Over the years a dual reduction rear axle with pneumatic tires was introduced, and was even available with the BG 6-cylinder 100-horsepower engine in the 1930s. The chain drive model in this photo was the most popular for construction applications, right up to the end of production in 1936. The AB was built from the start with an all-steel C-cab, and with its big brother, the AC, were the first American production trucks to be so equipped.
GROVES CONSTRUCTION CO./S. J. GROVES & SON CO.: Founded by S. J. Groves in 1906, he died in 1921. The company was then headed by son Franklin Groves, and grew to become one of the largest and most respected heavy/highway contractors in the nation, with district offices in many states, and joint ventures worldwide. Sadly, the company failed in the 1980s.
