    Description

This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of an elegant ca. 1920-1925 FEDERAL 1-Ton Panel Truck owned by Chas. H. Plumb, a Detroit Florist.
”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image.
DESCRIPTION: This early ca. 1920-1925 FEDERAL 1-Ton Panel Truck is from a linen-backed photo in my personal truck photo collection, a Federal company photo. Federal styling changed very little during this time. The elegant florist body would have been made by a local body manufacturer, mounted on a Federal 1-Ton cowl chassis, a common practice in the early days of truck manufacturing. In 1920 Federal was using both pneumatic tires and hard rubber as the customers choice. It would have been powered with a 4-cylinder Continental gasoline engine with an Eisemann ignition. 1920 was Federal’s 10th year in business.
CHAS. H. PLUMB: was a progressive florist located at 1430 Burns Ave, Detroit, MI, with a phone of Lincoln 211. From information on the internet, Chas. Plumb was a director in a national florist association in a 1922 issue of
    The American Florist
    .
HISTORY OF FEDERAL TRUCKS: Established in 1910 in Detroit, Martin Pulcher led the company in its early years, producing 115 trucks in its first year. By 1929 Federal was producing over 2800 trucks per year. While the Great Depression had a negative effect on Federal, in 1933 they introduced their ‘streamlining’ designs replacing the now outmoded vertical designs. Federal produced over 11,300 military vehicles for WWII. Small scale manufacturers such as Federal lacked the financial resources needed for the increased costs of styling and engineering changes to compete with the larger scale truck manufacturers. In 1950 Federal introduced its
    Style Liner Series
as the ‘most beautiful truck in America’. But poor sales and labor strikes continued to bring the company down. In 1952 Federal merged with parts supplier Fawick Airflex Co. of Cleveland. Loses continued, and in 1954 it was announced that Federal had become part of NAPCO Industries of Minneapolis. The “Golden Eagle” line in 1955 was the first restyling of the heavy duty truck line since 1938. That same year, 1955, all manufacturing was moved to Minneapolis but sales for the entire year only amounted to 56 units. Federal reached the end of the road in 1959. However in a 1970 NAPCO letter it was stated that Federal trucks were being manufactured in Istanbul, Turkey by a wholly owned subsidiary of the Turkish government. For most of its 50 years, Federal was known as an ‘assembled’ truck, manufacturing the cab and frame, but assembling most major components from outside suppliers.
