DESCRIPTION: This early Mack Manhattan Truck has the appearance of the style of trucks that Mack Brothers built in 1908 and the following years until 1916. This early Mack was purchased by Christopher L. Bengal, owner of the EMPIRE STORAGE WAREHOUSE in Hicksville, L.I. Hicksville was a hamlet and census-designated place within the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, on Long Island, New York. In this photo, the Mack Manhattan truck is pulling a wagon loaded with coal … quite possibly a wagon also built by the Mack Brothers. You’ll notice the truck is chain-drive, mounted on hard-rubber tires, with an open cab with no visible windshield, and only rolled-up canvas on the cab roof sides to protect the driver in inclement weather.
MACK ‘MANHATTAN’ TRUCKS: The first vehicle the Mack Brothers Motor Car Company in Brooklyn built in 1902 was an 18-20 passenger sightseeing bus given the trade name of ‘The Manhattan”. Additional orders for The Manhattan bus came rolling in, requiring larger quarters for the automotive phase of the wagon company. In 1904 the Mack Brothers had found several unused foundry and machine shop buildings in Allentown, PA, that were perfect for the manufacture of large vehicles. The Mack Brothers transferred some of the work-in-process, part of the skilled work crew, and some of the machines from Brooklyn to Allentown. The automotive industry was still in its infancy. While the Mack Brothers were interested in commercial vehicles, their first Manhattan buses were generically called ‘motor cars’. The construction of motor trucks had been contemplated in 1904, but the actual work to build the pilot models did not take place until the spring and summer of 1905. The trucks, like the buses, were given the trade name “Manhattan”. Two small delivery trucks were built in 1905, but their first 5-Ton truck, with the driver’s seat over the engine, was designed for heavier loads. Both 3 and 4-ton cab-over-engine models were also built. The famous Mack gasoline engine of 50-60 horsepower was built at the Allentown factory with little changes from 1905 to 1916, giving them the reputation for building durable and adequately powered heavy-duty motor trucks. In 1908 the 5-ton model was of the cab-over-engine style, and the 3-ton had the engine in front. Between 1905 and 1917, some 3,100 trucks of the Manhattan style were built in both Brooklyn and Allentown plants. In 1914 production for the famous AB Mack began, and in 1916 the now famous AC, known as the “Bulldog”, was produced … and as they say “the rest is history”.
